Standard Glass vs. Tempered Glass

Whats the difference between Standard Glass and Tempered Glass?

Many times we get asked what the difference is between standard glass and tempered glass. We also get questions for which glass best suites the needs of what they are doing with it. Here is some information to clarify the differences and when one should be used over the other.

Standard Glass: Standard Glass uses an annealing process that forces the glass to cool at a more rapid pace. With standard glass you have more ability to make changes to it such as cutting, reshaping, polishing edges, drilling holes and so much more. Standard glass when it breaks will break into irregular shaped shards.
Standard Glass can be used for things such as: Picture Frames, Tabletop/Desktop Glass, Shelves, Storm Windows, Cabinet Glass, etc.

Tempered Glass: Tempered Glass is much stronger than standard glass. Standard glass is more fragile. Tempered glass is four times stronger and the annealing process for tempered is done at a much slower process, giving it the better strength, and is used more for safety purposes. Unlike standard glass, once a piece is tempered, you are unable to make any changes to it such as cutting it down, reshaping, polishing, drilling holes. When tempered glass breaks, it breaks into small pieces, harmless for the most part. You would want to use tempered glass for things such as: Entrance doors, show and tub enclosures, outdoor furniture, and anything going into a bathroom. If you are putting something in your bathroom for example, the glass MUST be tempered if it is less than 18" from the ground, and any shower shelves should always be tempered.

Standard glass and usually Tempered Glass can also come in many different colors and styles such as antique, bronze, grey, black, frosted, and many more!

In reality you may think that Plexiglass is cheaper and a better option than regular glass. Plexiglass may in fact be a better option depending on what you're looking to do with it. Plexiglass however is more expensive. Plexiglass is stronger and more shatter resistant than regular glass, therefor making it more expensive than glass. Plexiglass is clear acrylic or a hard plastic. It is petroleum-based. Plexiglass is more resistant to weathering and erosion. In the long run, long-term maintenance and replacement costs may be significantly cheaper. Plexiglass is easier to scratch as it is softer than glass. Plexiglass is also lighter than glass while still offering many of the same options that glass does. Plexiglass is also easier for shape cuts. Recycling does become more difficult and potentially more expensive than glass. Plexiglass uses: *Window Panes *Greenhouse Glass *Craft Projects *Display Cases *Shelving Glass is a solid, an inorganic compound that cooled from a liquid to solid without passing through a crystalline state. Glass is brittle and composed primarily of silicas. Glass reflects more light than plexiglass surfaces. While glass can be cut easily, it is more difficult to cut shapes out of glass. Glass however is easier to recycle. Glass uses: *Tabletop Glass *Window Panes *Picture Frames *Cabinet Glass *Shelving If you are working on a project and need some advice on whether to use plexiglass or regular glass, please reach out to Weaver Glass.
